Three dead in shooting at California elementary school

At least three people were killed and two children wounded when a gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Northern California, according to local reports.

Several students were airlifted from the shooting scene at Rancho Tehama School near the community of Corning, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, according to KCRA.

“I know of at least three deaths,” Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told the station.

He said the shooter was killed by law enforcement and that officers had been sent to multiple scenes in the area.

The mayhem erupted shortly after 8 a.m. local time in Rancho Tehama, a town of 1,500 west of Corning in Tehama County, the , Redding Record Searchlight reported.

It started at a home and then continued at the school, KCRA reported.

Brian Flint told the news outlet that he received a call that his roommate was injured and that his truck had been stolen.

“The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” Flint said. “We made it aware that this guy is crazy and he’s been threatening us.”

A sheriff’s deputy said “multiple shots were fired in Rancho Tehama, with multiple victims.

“I am told the suspected shooter is deceased from law enforcement bullets,” the deputy said at the scene.

Two children were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to the Record Searchlight. Other schoolchildren were taken to a safe location.

One child was reported to have been shot in the right leg, according to emergency dispatch reports.

“It’s a very sad day for us in Tehama County,” said the visibly shaken deputy.

At least 100 law enforcement officers responded to “multiple scenes. We have at least five scenes right now,” the deputy said.

Initial reports said someone was barricaded inside a structure and there were multiple victims, including one who was dead.

Katrina Gierman, who lives on Rancho Tehama near the school, said she went outside and heard gunshots.

“I have not left my house because I am with my newborn son,” Gierman said. “Very scary moment. I have the right to bear arms, and I will protect my son if i have to.”

An official at the Corning Elementary School District confirmed the school is on lockdown, as is the nearby Rancho Tehama Airport.
